The Crane

It is the largest and oldest preserved port crane in Europe (built in 1444) and, at the same time, an urban gate and an element of the medieval fortifications. Until the 19th century, with the help of the Crane, goods were unloaded from ships and it was also used to erect masts. The heart of the Crane is the pair of treadmills with a diameter of 6 meters, powered by workers. The Crane could lift up to 4 tons to a height of 11 meters.

During World War II the wooden construction was burned to the ground but half of the brick part survived. The restored Crane is now a symbol of Gdansk
